Summary: Whether this site’s name is an allusion to the novel “The Great Gatsby” by the American author F. Scott Fitzgerald or not is irrelevant since the name is apt for the firm that specializes in vintage cars of this period. It harks back to that romantic era when the world was at peace (after World War I) and prosperity was enjoyed by almost everyone that led to some excesses in materialism. This was also the period of Norwegian-American economist Thorstein Veblen who coined the terms “conspicuous consumption” and “status seeking” to describe this period in American history. Restoring vintage cars to their former glory is hardly Veblen now but nostalgia; you cannot find those car spare parts anymore.

Summary: This particular firm has fewer cars in its vintage fleet but most of the cars have an interesting history. One was the personal car of former U.S. president Herbert Hoover (remember the giant Hoover Dam in Arizona?), another vintage car previously owned by an Italian duke, still another owned and rode in by American tobacco heiress Lady Isabella Wills plus other cars which are the only known remaining survivors of a particular make or model year. Renting these cars is like going back in time to a bygone era of industrial magnates and other fabulously and famously rich people. What a grand time!
